The Third Sunday of Easter

Sunday, April 23, 2023

emmaeus tn

Bulletin

Acts 2:14, 22-23; 1 Peter 1:17-21; Luke 24: 13:35. In the first reading, Peter proclaims to the Jews and all in Jerusalem that Jesus, commended to [them] by God, was also killed by them. But that God raised him up. Peter writes that all have been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ. In the Gospel, two disciples travelled from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing all that had happened. Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize him until they sat for a meal and he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.

Domenica 3A Di Pasqua

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I recall that during the COVID 19, Pope Francis, alone in St. Peter Basilica Square, offered prayers for the whole world to ask God for healing. We moved through a period of darkness throughout the pandemic. Churches were closed and people sheltered in place. We were scared of contracting the virus and perhaps we feared that we would die. In fact, many of us died. We felt uncertain what our future would be. It was an encounter with darkness in our lives. Jesus’ disciples also encountered darkness in their lives. They were confused and lost because they knew that Jesus was arrested, was crucified and died. Their hope disappeared after the death of Jesus. They felt lonely, frustrated and decided to give up their careers as followers of Jesus. But Jesus never left them alone.

Jesus let them experience their lives without His presence. As we hear in today’s Gospel, Luke describes two disciples of Jesus returning to Emmaus, their hometown. Perhaps they plan to return to their previous jobs. Jesus appears in their midst, converses, explains the Scriptures and gives them courage. They did not recognize Jesus until the breaking of the bread. They blamed themselves for not recognizing Jesus, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” Lk. 24: 13-35. Do we sometimes, like Jesus’ disciples, close our minds and hearts, not recognizing Jesus when we are in trouble, frustrated or lonely? In fact, God sends someone such as a priest or chaplain, doctor, friend, or stranger to be at our side to pray and heal us when we are in trouble or sickness. I hope that we recognize the presence of others as the sign of God’s presence in the moments of distress, commotion, or anxiety in our lives. Remember, Jesus is always present with us through the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus is present with us every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, at the consecration of the bread and wine, and holy communion.

May the risen Christ and the Holy Spirit be with us always to give us the courage to trust and recognize that God is present in our lives, especially when we are in darkness.

Have a blessed Easter!

–Fr. Tho Bui, SDB Pastor
