Online Bulletin
Acts 12: 1-11; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18; Matthew 16:13-19. In the first reading, Peter is arrested and imprisoned. An angel of the Lord wakes Peter from his sleep and leads him out of the prison. Paul writes to Timothy, The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. In the Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples: Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter says, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus tells Peter that he is the rock upon whom the Church will be built.
San Pietro e Paolo
From the Pastor’s Desk
Saints Peter and Paul are the two pillars on whom our Lord Jesus built his Church. Peter, was the first to respond to Jesus’ call while he was fishing by the shore of the Sea of Galilee. When Christ called Peter, he was a humble fisherman. He probably never attended school, his education mostly probably was provided by his family and Jewish tradition. Peter had a great love for Jesus, he followed Jesus on the way to Golgotha, but in a moment of weakness he denied Jesus three times. Jesus saw his frailty, but also that he could be strong in a role of leadership. Peter was chosen to be the leader of the apostles and the Church.
When Christ called Paul, he was a Pharisee, well-educated by the learned Gamaliel, and was able to speak more than one language. But before Paul met Jesus, he went after the Christians and persecuted them. And yet, like with Peter, Jesus saw the passion of Paul, who could become his apostle. Paul was chosen to be missionary to the Gentiles.
The feast of these two, very different Apostles of the Church, joined together calls us to grow into a community of Christ's disciples who welcome everyone no matter where we're from or who we are. Both underwent the test of faith. Both experienced a change of heart and conversion and became the apostles of Christ.
In today’s Gospel of Matthew, Jesus asks his disciples two questions: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” and “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus disciples, like other people, knew John the Baptist, the Prophets Elijah and Jeremiah and other prophets. No one knows for sure who Jesus is. Peter quickly responds to Jesus’ second question, “You are the Messiah!” Jesus recognized Peter’s strong faith, comparing his faith to the strength of the stones used in construction of buildings. Jesus recognizes that Peter’s faith is like a rock on which the Church is built. Jesus gives the Apostle the keys and authority of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus commands, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Mt. 13:19.
We are blessed that our parish was named after the two great saints who had such strong faith and became such great apostles of Christ. May their faith and passion help us to witness the Gospel by what we speak and how we act in our daily life.
Happy Feast of Saints Peter and Paul!
