Bulletin
Acts 12: 1-11; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18; Matthew 16:13-19. In the first reading, Peter is arrested and imprisoned. An angel of the Lord wakes Peter from his sleep and leads him out of the prison. Paul writes to Timothy, The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. In the Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples: Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter says, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus tells Peter that he is the rock upon whom the Church will be built.
San Pietro e Paolo
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is exciting that this year we celebrate 100th years of our Saints Peter and Paul Church building. The Salesians of Don Bosco have been ministering this parish for 127 years (1897-2024). In June 29, 1884 Saints Peter and Paul was dedicated by Archbishop Alemany, at the original church located at Filbert and Dupont Street (now Grant Avenue). Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul and we, parishioners, celebrate our 140 years of the feast of the two great Saints.
Saints Peter and Paul are the two pillars on whom our Lord Jesus built his Church. Peter, a fisherman, was the first to respond to Jesus’ call while he was fishing by the shore of the Sea of Galilee. While Paul, a Pharisee and a persecutor of Christians, was called while he was on his way to Damascus, to become Jesus’ apostle. Both of them underwent through the test of faith. They experienced a change of heart and conversion and became the apostles of Christ.
Peter had a great love for Jesus, followed Jesus on the way to Golgotha, but in a moment of weakness he denied Jesus three times. Jesus saw his frailty, but he is a strong in a role of leadership. Peter was chosen to be the leader of the apostles and the Church.
Before Paul met Jesus, he went after the Christians and persecuted them. Similar to Peter, Jesus saw the passion of Paul who could become his apostle. Paul was chosen to be missionary to the Gentiles.
In today’s Gospel of Matthew, Jesus asks his disciples two questions: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” and “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus disciples, like other people, knew John the Baptist, the Prophets Elijah and Jeremiah and other prophets. No one knows for sure who Jesus is. Peter quickly responds to Jesus’ second question, “You are the Messiah!” Jesus recognized Peter’s strong faith, comparing his faith to the strength of the stones used in construction of buildings. Jesus recognizes that Peter’s faith is like a rock on which the Church is built. Jesus gives the Apostle the keys and authority of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus commands, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Mt. 13:19.
We are blessed that our parish was named after the two great saints who had such strong faith and became great apostles of Christ. May their faith and passion help us to witness the Gospel by what we speak and how we act in our daily life.
Happy Feast of Saints Peter and Paul!

Particular Items
Second Collection: This week we have the annual second collection for Peter’s Pence, supporting the good works of the Holy Father all over the world.
About our Patrons: “The feast of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul is at once a grateful memorial of great witnesses of Jesus Christ and a solemn confession in favor of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. It is above all a feast of catholicity. The sign of Pentecost — the new community that speaks in all tongues and unites all peoples in one people, in one family of God — became a reality… The great psalm of the Passion, Psalm 21, whose first verse “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Jesus pronounced on the cross, ended with the vision: “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him” (Psalm 21:28)When Peter and Paul came to Rome the Lord, who invoked that psalm on the cross, was risen; this victory of God would now have to be proclaimed to all peoples, thus fulfilling the promise with which the psalm concluded. Catholicity means universality — multiplicity that becomes unity; unity that still remains multiplicity.”—Pope Benedict XVI.

HELP! & GUESS WHO? As we prepare for the 100th Anniversary we need help from parishioners. Were you or your parents married here? We want pictures to use at the Renewal of Vows celebration. Call Gibbons at the parish office or email gibbons@salesiansspp.org. Meanwhile, can you name this lovely SSPP couple and that young priest? (Last week’s mystery couple were Nunzio and Antoinette ‘Sis’ Alioto, very well known all over North Beach, married here in 1943).
