Bulletin
Acts 8:5-8, 14-17; 1 Peter 3:15-18; John 14: 15-21. In the first reading, Philip proclaims the Gospel in Samaria and many people are cured. Peter and John follow and lay hands on the newly baptized there, and they received the Holy Spirit. In the second reading, Peter encourages the community to always be ready to give reason for their hope, and be willing to suffer for doing good. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that those who love him will follow his commandments.
From the Pastor’s Desk Saint WHO?
Damien de Veuster; Priest (+1888)
“All of us will die of something. Damien died of love.” (Bernard Bangley). Born in Belgium in 1840, Joseph de Veuster was the youngest of seven children, four of whom became religious. At nineteen, Joseph followed his older brother into the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary., taking the religious name Damien. Eager to be a missionary, he prayer regularly before an image of Saint Francis Xavier. And when his older brother became too ill for an assignment in the Hawaiian Islands, Damien volunteered to take his place. He was ordained in Honolulu and assigned to a church on the Big Island.
At that time, in an effort to stop the spread of leprosy, the Hawaiian government deported all those though to be infected to a lonely peninsula on the island of Molokai. It was a hellish place, where despairing people lived in isolation. Many gave themselves over to debauchery, but others begged for spiritual assistance. The bishop spoke to his priests, and Father Damien volunteered to go.
By his own request and that of the residents, he remained on Molokai permanently. For the next sixteen years, he served “without distinction of race or religion,” living the last four years as a leper himself. He died on April 15, but his feast is celebrated on May 10, the day he went to Molokai.
Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Damien de Veuster, help us to lay down our lives f or our friends, especially through the gift of our presence.

St. Augustine on the meaning of the Ascension: “Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.”
