Online Bulletin

Proverbs 8:22–31; Psalm 8 “O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!” Romans 5:1–5; John 16:12–15 Before the Trinity was revealed, the author of Proverbs personified God’s wisdom as an entity distinct from God and deigning to stay on the earth God created. Saint Paul teaches the Romans that through the Son and Holy Spirit, we share in God’s grace and God’s love. In the Gospel Jesus promises his disciples the Holy Spirit, who guides us to all truth. With all that we have received from our generous God, we can truly sing, “O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. The Catholic Church understands the Most Holy Trinity as the central mystery of the Christian faith. It is not just a mystery but the source of all other mysteries of faith. Because it is the mystery, our human knowledge cannot comprehend it.

Think about a triangle. There are three corners in the triangle, and each corner connects to the other. This geometric shape can help us understood only one God in three persons. Within one God, there are three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Three persons connect to each other as the unity of God. The Father is eternally the Father of the Son, the Son is eternally begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son.

The Church teaches us that each of these persons is fully and entirely God, possessing the fullness of the one, undivided divine nature. They are not parts of God, nor are they merely modes of God. The three divine persons are truly distinct from one another, yet they are inseparable in what they are and in what they do. All divine actions outside the Trinity are performed by all three Persons in common. The Father is the creator, the Son is the redeemer and the Holy Spirit is the sanctification. In today’s Gospel of John 16:12-15, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the unity of the Trinity: "All that the Father has is mine; therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you."John 16:12-15. This verse highlights the divine unity and co-equality of the Father and the Son. Jesus possesses everything the Father possesses, emphasizing his full divinity.

Every time we recite the Nicene Creed, we affirm that we believe in the Most Holy Trinity. The word “consubstantial” with the Father in Greek means “of the same substance” or “of one being.” It affirms that the Son is fully God, just as the Father is fully God, not a lesser or created being, and the Holy Spirit is full divinity. These words, “Begotten, not made” affirm that the Son is begotten of the Father, not made or created. And this phrase, “the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,” describes the eternal origin of the Spirit from the Father and the Son. The Most Holy Trinity is in communion with perfect love. God is love, and this love is intrinsically relational within the divine life itself. The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, and their mutual love is the Holy Spirit.

We can recognize this in our Christian life: when we are baptized, the priest or deacon says, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” It reminds us that we are called to immerse ourselves into the Trinitarian life of God. For us as Catholics, the Most Holy Trinity is the very essence of God, revealed to humanity. The Trinity is the living, loving reality of who God is in himself as he invites us to participate into his divine life.

Happy Feast of the Most Holy Trinity!
