Genesis 14:18–20: Psalm 110 “You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.” 1 Corinthians 11:23–26: Luke 9:11b–17 The feeding of the multitudes From ancient times, wheat was ground into flour and baked into bread and grapes were crushed into juice and allowed to ferment into wine. Bread and wine became staples of the human diet, creating a simple meal that could be shared with others. Salem’s king served them to a victorious Abram, pairing the bread and wine with a call for God’s blessing. At the Last Supper, Jesus blessed the bread and wine and shared them with his disciples as his body and blood. Let us thank God for the simple gifts of wheat and grapes.

Visitors to North Beach, San Francisco, often leave with the same impression: “What a beautiful place, and the food is amazing!” North Beach possesses a unique spirit of an old San Francisco neighborhood. It is a dynamic of cultural diversity, where Italian and Chinese heritages intertwine in daily life. Historic Italian cafés and bakeries give the area a European flavor, while the nearby presence of Chinatown brings the richness of dim sum houses, herbal shops, and bustling markets. This intersection of cultures makes North Beach a visual delight. And, the food here doesn’t just advertise, but it also tells the story of a community and shapes its identity.

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, a feast that invites us into a new and sacred reality. We can say that food, after all, offers more than just nutrition; it comforts, connects, and reflects who we are. When we savor a particular dish, we’re not just enjoying its flavor; we are encountering the history, values, and soul of a people. Trying a new cuisine could also mean being open to a new culture, valuing its gifts, and recognizing its beauty. Thus, we can also affirm that the Eucharist is no social gathering with symbols and an ordinary meal. Eucharist is the heavenly food given by the Father, offered by the Son, and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. As we gather at the table of the Lord, we do so with hearts full of thanksgiving, acknowledging our shared identity as sons and daughters of God. We give thanks for Jesus Christ, who offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. In the Eucharist, he becomes our sustenance. We eat and are no longer spiritually hungry. To receive the Body and Blood of Christ is to profess our faith and proclaim our unity. We are one in Him, nourished by the same divine food, bound together in love.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus also tells his disciples to feed the crowd. It is more than an invitation but rather a command. The task seemed impossible to feed five thousand people with only a few loaves and fish. The disciples were doubtful, limited by earthly logic. But Jesus did not rebuke them; instead, he told them to have the crowd sit. He took the bread, said a blessing, and gave it to his disciples to distribute. And then, the miracle unfolded: “They all ate and were satisfied.” Not only was there enough, there was an abundance: twelve baskets of leftovers. God provides more than enough when we trust Him.

As we come to the Lord’s table, we are not only invited to be nourished, but we are also sent forth to feed others. We are called to servants to the Lord in his mission. We are called to share the heavenly bread with those who hunger, physically and spiritually. Like the crowd in the Gospel, all who receive the Body and Blood of Christ will be satisfied.

May we always approach the Eucharist with reverence and gratitude, remembering that no matter who we are or where we come from, we are one flock, gathered around the same table, fed by the same Shepherd.
