Bulletin
Wisdom 9:13–18b; Psalm 90 “In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.” Philemon 9–10, 12–17; Luke 14:25–33. Jesus has a sobering, even shocking, warning to would-be disciples in today’s Gospel. In uncompromising language he tells the crowds that whoever wishes to be his disciple must make a total commitment. After all, the apostles left behind their families, their homes, and all their possessions to follow Jesus. As we look at our own commitment from a different perspective, let us pray for the grace to be worthy disciples of the Lord.
Domenica 23A Del Tempo Ordinario
SAINT WHO?
The Korean Lay Martyrs (1791-1867) Feastday September 20
An early missionary stated that Korean Catholics possessed the perfect disposition for the faith: “Once convinced, they attach themselves to it, in spite of all sacrifices it may cost them.” Christianity came to Korea in the late 18th century, and much of the groundwork was laid through the work of lay converts. Catholic thought had come to Korea through books, and the first Korean Catholics were received into the Church in other countries and then returned to their homeland to evangelize.
Korea at the time had a social system based on Confucianism, and included a large base of lower-class workers and slaves. The educated upper class began to introduce the faith to the other groups, and Catholicism, which united all classes, especially in the Eucharist, as equals and friends, took strong hold. This teaching, however, was viewed by the government as disrupting the social order. Moreover, Catholics refused to participate in the worship of ancestors, which was also perceived as subversive.
Between 1791 and 1867, ten thousand Catholics died in four major persecutions. In 1984, 103 of these were canonized by John Paul II, including 92 lay people. Old and young, these took to heart their status as children of God and were willing to renounce their ancient practice and all temporal goods rather than their heavenly inheritance.
Father of all, through the powerful example of the Korean Martyrs, grant to the faithful, especially the laity, unshakable confidence in their adoptive sonship.
