Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29. Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a; Luke 14:1, 7-14. Sirach used aphorisms like Jesus used parables: to teach his audience how to put God’s commands into action. Today we hear both Sirach and Jesus counsel us to act with humility. Sirach tells us we will find favor with God; Jesus imagines a wedding banquet where the host invites the person who took the lowest seat to move up to a higher position. With true humility, for we are all sinners, let us listen today to the word of God.

今天讀經的主題是謙遜，謙遜的反面是驕傲，是七罪宗之首。謙遜是獲得救贖的主要條件之一，是那麼重要，卻又不十分被重視和去實行 。在讀經一《德訓篇》中也告訴我們：「你越偉大，在一切事上，越當謙下，這樣你才能在上主面前獲得恩寵。」謙遜不是否認自己的優長，而是明白、並承認這些優長都是天主所賜。

耶穌趁在法利塞首領家吃飯的機會，提醒人謙遜的重要。祂說：「凡高舉自己的，必被貶抑。」 這事看來似乎很簡單，可是如果我們在日常生活中，有時也會「爭奪首席」。那就是表揚自己，為自己辯解，理由可以是為了行善、為了光榮天主，但如果有勇氣反省， 會發覺，可能一切都是為了自己的虛榮。

人生的終向是天上的耶路撒冷，願我們求聖母幫助，效法她謙遜的美德，勇敢地完成這朝聖的旅程。

Dear Parishioners,

When we are invited to a banquet or reception, we receive an invitation at least a month in advance. We are also required to accept the invitation and reply to the host. Then the host will assign our seats. Most of the time our names are indicated by tables or seats. It will be embarrassing if we sit at a wrong table. Is the message that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel relevant to our modern day banquets? Probably not! But the point that Jesus makes is: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 14:11)

Jesus tells us to be humble, “Go and sit in the lowest place.” This reminds us to not pridefully seek a place of honor. The more self-centered we are, the less we are putting God at the center of our lives. Sometimes we pride ourselves by saying “I am so good and my ways of doing things are the best.” We know that pride is one of the seven deadly sins. Pope Francis once said to people, “I am a sinner…pray for me.” In a humble way we admit that we do sin.

How can we be humble? We all are called to good followers of Jesus. Imitate Jesus. Even Jesus’ disciples wanted to be the first and most honored. One day the mother of Zebedee’s sons asked Jesus that one of her two sons sit on his right, and the other on his left, when Jesus enters into his kingdom. Jesus challenged them by saying, “Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” Their answered, “Yes. We can.” They have no idea what that means. At the last Supper, Jesus taught his disciples to serve one another. Wash each other feet like Jesus did!

I admire the caregivers who work humbly by taking care of our elders. We have caregivers here for Fr. Armand ,who is going to be 103 years old this coming March. I observe that they will do anything to take care of Fr. Armand’s needs. From changing, cleaning, cooking and so forth. It is a challenging job and it takes a lot of patience and humility.

I invite you to reflect on the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi: “Lord make me an instrument of your peace, let me seek not so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be love as to love.” We are called to imitate Jesus, to love and humbly serve one another, without expecting to be paid back. St. Francis of Assisi and Pope Francis have set good examples for us.

Second Collection: Today we have a second collection for our Building Maintenance Fund. As many of you know, our 100-year-old Church has many aches and pains that need to be attended to. Please be generous!

Madonna della Guardia: Today at the noon Italian Mass, we will honor Madonna della Guardia. She appeared to Benedetto Pareto on Mt. Figogna, by Genoa, on August 29, 1490, and is revered by the Genovese the world over.

Eucharistic Adoration/ Anointing of the Sick: We have Eucharistic Adoration every Friday, following the 7:00 AM Mass. And on the first Friday of the moth we have the Anointing following the 7:00 AM Mass.

San Francisco Annual Rosary Rally! On Saturday, October 1, you are invited join Catholics from around the Bay Area at San Francisco’s Annual Rosary Rally. The day begins with Mass at 10:00AM at St. Mary’s Cathedral followed by a Eucharistic Procession to St. Boniface Church There will be a Saints Peter and Paul contingent—we will process from the Church to St. Mary’s Cathedral. Madonna del Lume: On October 2 we celebrate the feast of Madonna del Lume, beloved of the people of Sicily and those of Sicilian ancestry the world over. Mass will be at noon on October 2, followed by the procession to Fisherman’s Wharf.
