Deuteronomy 30:10–14; Psalm 69; Colossians 1:15–20; Luke 10:25–37. Moses speaks to a sinful people in the first reading, pleading with them to keep the LORD’s commandments as they repent with their whole heart and soul. In the Gospel, a scholar of the law—of all God’s commandments—goes one step further, asking Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Realizing that loving one’s neighbor is at the heart of the answer, he asks Jesus who his neighbor is. It is in this context that Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan, asking the questioner who was the true neighbor. May today’s readings inspire us to accept the challenge to treat all others—friends or strangers—as worthy of our love.

Domenica 15A Del Tempo Ordinario

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

First, let us be reminded by the confession and teaching of Saint Paul to the community of Colossians in today’s second reading. Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the source of all creation, and the head of the Church. All things were made through him, and through his death on the cross, he brought peace and reconciliation to all. We, too, profess faith in this same Jesus Christ, who is present in all things and holds the answers we seek. In today’s Gospel, through a conversation with a scholar of the law, Jesus teaches that inheriting eternal life is not just about knowing what is right, but it is about doing it. Knowing God’s commandments is not enough; we must live them out in action. “Do this and you will live,” Jesus said to the scholar of the law.

As Jesus enlightens the scholar of the law, he also challenges us to go beyond simply practicing God’s commandments out of obligation. Instead, we are called to act out of love. Jesus shifts the focus from a question of “Who is my neighbor?” to “How can I be a neighbor?” It is no longer about what others do to us but what we can do for others. Jesus invites the scholar and us to look deeply into our hearts for the answer, and the scholar responds correctly. “The one who treated him with mercy.”

Through the example of the Good Samaritan, who was moved with compassion, Jesus shows us what it means to be a true neighbor: someone who crosses boundaries, overcomes prejudice, and shows mercy. We are all travelers on the road of life, and sometimes, it happens that we or others are left beaten and broken along the way. We are called not to ignore them, but to respond with compassion and care, regardless of the differences between us.

It is good to ask sometimes, “Am I too busy to offer a service for others? What may be preventing me from spending a meaningful moment with someone in need?”

Again, we can find answers in Christ Jesus, the image of the invisible God.
