Isaiah 66:10-14c; Galatians 6:14-18; Luke 10: 1-12, 17-20, or 10:1-9. The prophet Isaiah instructs us to rejoice because the Lord assures us he will extend prosperity and comfort. In Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, he writes that the cross of Jesus Christ has brought about a new creation, one which will bring peace and mercy to those who follow him. Luke’s Gospel tells of Christ appointing and sending seventy-two followers out in pairs – like lambs among wolves –with instructions on how to labor in the field and proclaim the kingdom of God.

Domenica 14A Del Tempo Ordinario

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This August, the Salesians will be blessed: we will have two brothers make perpetual profession, one brother will be ordained deacon, and one deacon will be ordained priest. We need more vocations to the priesthood and religious life! I invite all of you to pray for vocations by asking our young people to consider and respond to God’s call. Today's Gospel reading from Luke presents us with powerful and challenging commission from Jesus Christ Himself. He sends out seventy-two of His disciples, not just the twelve apostles, but a much larger group, "two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he himself was about to go." Our generation is called to continue to bring the good news to every corner of the world.

Through our baptism and confirmation, we are called to follow Jesus and to build the Kingdom of God on earth. Jesus prepares his disciples’ hearts and minds for building the Kingdom of God. Jesus asks them to "pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Then Jesus commands them to cure the sick and tells them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’" Healing, both physical and spiritual, was a sign of the kingdom's presence. It was a tangible manifestation of God's love and power.

The Church's ministers and missionaries are to follow Jesus, who instructs his disciples, "Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way." Imagine the disciples hearing this! Lambs among wolves – a stark warning of vulnerability and potential danger. No provisions, no extra clothes, no time for pleasantries. This wasn't a suggestion; it was a radical call to trust in God's providence and to focus solely on the mission. For religious people who live the vows of poverty, obedience and chastity are called to detach from the world’s materials, to go wherever the needs are, and sacrifice their lives to bring the Good News to others.

Like Jesus’ disciples, priests and religious people are sent to do ministries. Recently, the Salesian Province assigned Fr. Vien to Stockton and Br. Ernie to Laredo, Texas, and other Salesians also obey their new assignments. Jesus makes clear to us and his disciples to go to bring God’s peace to the people, mingle with them, and whatever people support, accept it and then move on to the next community. These words teach us about the importance of receptivity and humility. They were to accept hospitality, not demand it, and to recognize that their worth was in the message they carried, not in their worldly possessions or status.

What does this Gospel passage mean for us today? We are all called to be missionaries. The seventy-two were not just an elite few; they represented the broader community of disciples. Each one of us, through our Baptism and Confirmation, has been commissioned by Christ to share the Good News. We may not be sent out "two by two" to foreign lands, but we are called to be missionaries in our own homes, our workplaces, our schools, and our communities. We religious are called to radical trust in God's providence. The instruction is to a radical detachment from worldly possessions and a profound reliance on God. Our mission is to proclaim the Kingdom of God. This is not just about reciting doctrines but about living out the values of the Kingdom: peace, justice, mercy, love, and healing. When we forgive, when we serve the poor, and when we show compassion, we are making the Kingdom of God present.

It's easy to get caught up in the external signs of faith, the ministries we perform, and the good works we do. But Jesus reminds us that the greatest joy is the simple, profound truth that we belong to Him, that we are loved, and that our names are written in heaven. Let us pray for the blessing to be faithful laborers in our church community. May we have the courage to go forth, trusting in God’s providence, proclaiming His Kingdom, and always finding our deepest joy in God.

Fr. Tho Bui, SDB Pastor
