Acts 2:1–11;. Psalm 104; 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7, 12–13 or Romans 8:8–17 John 20:19–23 . or John 14:15–16, 23b–26. It could be said that the climax of all the readings we will hear today comes in the very first paragraph of the first reading. A strong driving wind . . . tongues of fire . . . speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit made quite the entrance! But the special effects are only the beginning. With the Holy Spirit, the apostles could be understood by every foreigner, no matter their native language. With the Holy Spirit, we have God dwelling in us, uniting us as one. With the Holy Spirit, we have the fulfillment of Jesus’ parting promise to his disciples, God’s abiding gift to us. Let us be aware of the Holy Spirit within us as we listen to God’s word.
Domenica Di Pentecoste
From the Pastor’s Desk
This Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost, a solemn and joyful feast marking three key realities: the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Mary, the birth of the Church, and the call to mission in the world.
First, Pentecost is the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to his disciples that he would send the Advocate who would lead them into all truth. Jesus’ ascension was not a departure or abandonment, but a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. In today’s Gospel, even while the doors were locked, the Risen Lord appeared among the disciples and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” God is faithful to his promises. From Abraham to Moses, through the prophets, and now in the fullness of time, God has revealed his saving plan. Jesus, the only begotten Son, was sent into the world, and now, with the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Church receives the divine breath that gives life and mission.
By receiving the Holy Spirit, the Apostles were given a share in Divine power to forgive sins: “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” As Catholics, we encounter this grace especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The gift of mercy is not a distant idea, but it is alive and at work today through the Holy Spirit. Secondly, Pentecost signifies the beginning of the Church. On that day, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, delivered his first homily. He boldly proclaimed that Jesus, whom they had crucified, is Lord and has been raised from the dead. His words, rooted in the Scriptures and the prophecy of Joel, pierced the hearts of his listeners. When they asked, “What must we do?” Peter urged them to repent and be baptized. On that day, about 3,000 people were added to their number. This is why we call Pentecost the birthday of the Church: for the first time, the apostles were united in mission, speaking many languages yet proclaiming one message, the Good News of Jesus Christ (Acts 2).
Lastly, Pentecost reminds us that we are a sent people. Jesus said to his apostles, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” This is not merely a suggestion but a commissioning. The mission of the Church did not end with the apostles, but it continues in us. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the apostles went out into the world, even to the point of martyrdom. We give thanks to God for their courage and fidelity.
“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” These words still echo today. Each of us is called to be a disciple, to be sent into the world to proclaim the Gospel. And, practically to be sent to those who are around us, our family members, our loved ones. We should also remember that we are not doing it alone. The Holy Spirit remains with us, guiding, strengthening, and reminding us of the gifts we have been given.
This Pentecost, may we renew our commitment to the mission entrusted to us. May we welcome the Holy Spirit with open hearts, and may our lives proclaim the mighty works of God. And we can say, it is you, God who make it possible.
