Pentecost Sunday
Sunday, May 28, 2023
Acts 2:1-11; 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13; John 20:19-23. The first reading recounts the dramatic coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples — and their resulting ability to speak in different tongues. In his Letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul writes that while there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, there is but the same Spirit, and the same God. In the Gospel, Jesus appears to the disciples in a locked room, gives them the Holy Spirit, and grants them the authority to forgive sins.

Saint WHO?
Saint Joan of Arc; Virgin, Counsel
Honored as the patron of soldiers, Joan of Arc began life as a simple peasant girl, and never received formal military training. But as she entered her teens, she was prepared for her mission by Saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine of Alexandria. Through them she received supernatural awareness of her place in God’s plan.
“I must be at the King’s side. There will be no help if not from me.”: With heavenly boldness, she inspired stunning French victories, ending the long siege of Orleans by the English, winning nine out of thirteen battles, and forcing at least thirty cities and towns to surrender without a fight. Despite her youth and inexperience, her ability drew praise from her soldier peers, who described her as “an expert,” “most skillful,” one who “acquitted herself magnificently.”
Joan’s saintly advisors had warned her she would suffer. Her great suffering came as she was abandoned by the king whose crown she had preserved, sold to her enemies, and condemned as a heretic by a stacked court. She was kept in humiliating and dangerous confinement, where she had to dress in men’s clothes to preserve her virginity. But she was faithful to God’s command, and she entered into eternal life in 1431. Her condemnation was reversed a quarter-century after her death, and she was canonized in 1920.
O Holy Spirit, make us attentive to your voice and Courageous in carrying out your commands.
