Bulletin
Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:6-11; Matthew 26: 14-27, 66 or 27:11-54. Saint Matthew writes of Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem, where some of the very large crowd...cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. Isaiah prophesies of one who will speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Paul writes to the Philippians bout the total self-giving of Christ and his exaltation by the Father. In the Gospel, Matthew gives his account of the last hours of Jesus, including the Passover meal, his betrayal, and his passion, death, and burial.
Domenica Delle Palme
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. Jesus enters into Jerusalem on a donkey and people spread their cloaks and put out branches on the road and sing out in loud voices, “Hosanna to the Son of David.” A wonderful parade to welcome Jesus, but it will soon turn into the suffering of Christ.
At the beginning of the liturgy today, we act out like people in Jesus’ time, waving the palms and singing, “Hosanna to the Son of God.” It is a joyful celebration as we welcome Jesus into our midst. Our joy becomes sadness when we listen to the passion of Christ. We heard people shout at Jesus “Hosanna,” then later they shout against Jesus, “Crucify him, crucify him.” They want to silence Jesus. They close their eyes and ears, and don’t listen to Jesus. They mock the suffering of Christ. They want to kill God’s Son.
Why did Jesus go to Jerusalem to suffer and be killed? The answer is because Jesus loves us. He wants to experience human suffering and dying. Jesus is full of love and compassion. He is willing to go to the cross for our redemption. As St. Paul wrote, “Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Phi. 2:6-9) The suffering of Christ reminds us that God knows human suffering. When we are suffering, we must remember the suffering that Jesus went through from the garden of Gethsemane to Golgotha. When we are troubled, we come to Jesus and ask for help. He understands us by saying, “Been there, done that.” Jesus responds, “I know how much you are suffering; I understand your pain.” It is our loving God who is full of mercy and compassion. When we are in pain or sin, do we come to God for consolation and forgiveness? Or do we distance ourselves from God or blame God? No matter who we are and what we do, we have the God who understands our human suffering and forgives our sins.
As we anticipate in this Holy Week and the Easter Triduum, let us focus on meditating on the passion of Christ and offer to God all of our human suffering, challenges and struggles in life. May the mercy and love of Christ comfort and forgive us.
Have a blessed holy week!
