Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:6-11; Matthew 26: 14-27, 66 or 27:11-54. Saint Matthew writes of Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem, where some of the very large crowd...cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. Isaiah prophesies of one who will speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Paul writes to the Philippians bout the total self-giving of Christ and his exaltation by the Father. In the Gospel, Matthew gives his account of the last hours of Jesus, including the Passover meal, his betrayal, and his passion, death, and burial.
Domenica Delle Palme
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today, we celebrate Palm Sunday, the threshold of Holy Week. Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus entered Jerusalem to begin His Passion. In a spontaneous outpouring of adoration, the crowds laid down their cloaks and cut branches from the trees. They recognized someone divine, seeing the hope of Israel riding not on a warhorse of earthly might, but on a humble donkey, a symbol of peace. Yet, the irony of this day is profound. Today, we hear the crowds acclaiming Him: "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" By Good Friday, those same voices will shift to a chilling cry: "Crucify him!"
In Jerusalem today, pilgrims still gather annually to reenact this entrance. They line the roads, waving olive branches and beating drums, filling the air with joyful sounds as they process toward the city.
As we wave our blessed palms today, we join that living history. We echo those ancient cries: "Hosanna to the Son of David!" By lifting these palms, we pledge our allegiance to Christ. We acknowledge Him as our King; the one who speaks words of eternal life and comes to save us. It is a moment of triumph, where we, like the first disciples, proclaim our faith in the Messiah who enters His city in glory.
However, the liturgy today holds a stark contrast. As the Gospel begins, the tone shifts dramatically from celebration to sorrow. We turn our ears toward the Passion of our Lord, hearing the heavy narrative of betrayal, denial, unjust accusations, and the agonizing silence of the cross.
May these blessed palms be more than just decorations; let them be symbols of our commitment to follow the King who came not to be served, but to serve. They remind us that true glory is found not in earthly power, but in the selfless love that leads to eternal life.
As we enter this most holy of weeks, let us pray for the grace to understand the depth of God’s love; a love that led Jesus to the cross. May we find the courage to follow Him, not just with joyful shouts of "Hosanna," but with hearts ready to share in His suffering, so that we may ultimately share in the glory of His Resurrection on the Easter Sunday
Let us remember all of our catechumens and candidates as they are preparing to receive the sacraments this Holy Saturday Vigil.
Have a blessed Holy Week!
