Isaiah 55:10-11; Romans 8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9. Isaiah describes the word of God as fruitful, not returning to the Lord until his will is accomplished. Paul writes to the Romans, addressing human suffering and looking beyond it to the promise of heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the sower and explains its meaning.

Domenica 15A Del Tempo Ordinario

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For those of us who have worked on a farm, the parable we heard in today’s readings is highly relatable. I can personally relate to this kind of work because of my experience in a rice field. When I was in high school in Vietnam, I used to visit my uncle during the summer and help him work on his rice field. I recall pulling out weeds and seeing rice plants growing in various places, even along the walking paths. What we heard from today’s readings reminds us that God is not only the sower; he is also the one who tills the soil. Our spiritual fruitfulness is not the result of our own labors, but, rather, our responsiveness to God’s work in our hearts.

When we look at farmers cultivating the soil to plant seeds in a field, we can picture just how much seed is sown into the ground. There is plenty of it, and yet only a few seeds spring up and bear fruit. Jesus uses the image of sowing seeds to teach us about his words, which guide how we should live and what we should do in our lives. Jesus himself keeps sowing his Word among us as an encouragement, a call, and a challenge. We read and listen to the Scripture all the time, but do we let it take root in our hearts and in our lives? What kind of crop do we let the Word of God produce? God is generous with his Word, but are we generous with our response? As we listen to Jesus speak to us today, let us welcome his Word with an open mind and heart, letting it take root in us, grow, and yield rich soil and a wonderful harvest.

There’s a common misunderstanding that arises when we hear today’s Gospel. We know that the different types of soil represent the different responses people can have to God’s word. And yet, many of us presume that if the soil of our hearts is like the rocky ground or the thorny patch, it is up to us alone to till that soil and make God’s word grow in us.

As we gather to celebrate this Eucharist, let us ask the Lord to grant us greater awareness, better listening, and deeper discernment as we respond to the ways God is at work in us. May we open our minds and hearts to a greater level of readiness, so that the Lord will be able to produce abundant fruit in our daily lives.

Have a blessed week!

Fr. Tho Bui
