Isaiah 55:1-3; Romans 8:35, 37-39; Matthew 14:13-21. The Lord speaks through Isaiah, exhorting his people to come to the water and be renewed by the everlasting covenant. Paul  tells the Romans that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ. In the Gospel, after hearing of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus heals the sick and feeds the 5,000 abundantly.

今天彌撒的讀經一是依撒意亞先知所寫的的一段：「凡口渴的，到水泉來吧！那沒有錢的，也請來吧！請來買不花錢、不索值的酒和奶吃。」在舊約時代，往往用充足的酒、油、奶來表示財富。先知告訴我們天主慈愛地照顧我們。而今天的福音更進一步表現出天主的慈愛，祂派遣聖子來安慰、幫助、救贖我們。 

耶穌聽到若翰去世的消息，悄悄地坐船離開來到一處偏僻的荒野去祈禱。羣眾知道了，一直徒步找祂。耶穌自己雖然因為若翰的死亡很傷心，但祂不顧自己，治好他們帶來的病人，並且教導他們，更顯聖跡，以五餅二魚餵飽他們。餅和魚固然是當時群眾的需要食糧，但也是日後耶穌要給的永生之糧的預象。我們今天從耶穌得到的不單是餅和魚，而是祂的身體和寶血。這奧跡比五餅二魚更偉大，這精神的食糧是千百年來用之不完取之不盡的，但耶穌要我們要像當年的群眾一樣，懷着熱情和信賴去跟隨耶穌，尋找耶穌。 

本來，耶穌要顯任何奇跡都不需要我們幫助，但祂願意我們和祂合作。人雖然能力有限，但祇要我們願意為自己的兄弟付出，那怕是最微薄的力量，天主也會把它變成偉大的德能。 

聖德蘭修女就是很好的例子。

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, 

In 1993, I went to World Youth Day (WYD) in Denver, Colorado, with a group of about 40 young adults from St. Luke in Stockton, including two Salesian priests. Hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world came to this event.  

The WYD organizers had to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for all those people, so they set up McDonald's food booths on one side of the state park. For every meal, we were served quickly and had plenty of food, despite the massive crowd. The evening before WYD ended, everyone hiked about 10 miles and gathered at Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora, near Denver, to attend the vigil service with Pope St. John Paul II.  

In modern times, it is relatively easy to feed that many people, but during Biblical times, it was impossible—which is why Jesus’ disciples panicked. 

As we heard in today’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples were probably overwhelmed to see so many hungry people waiting to be fed. Philip asks Jesus, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?" Another disciple tells him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" (John 6:7–9). They panicked because of the size of the crowd. Yet Jesus knew exactly what he was going to do. He multiplied the loaves and fish and had his disciples distribute them. Everyone ate their fill, and the disciples collected twelve wicker baskets of leftovers. Jesus not only feeds people with spiritual food through his teaching and healing, but he also satisfies their physical hunger. God can fulfill our needs abundantly. 

Today, as we gather for the Eucharist and receive Holy Communion, we believe that Jesus continues to give himself to us as food and drink. When we receive Jesus, we are called to imitate him by living a Christian way of life—that is, to love and care for one another. We thank Jesus for this great gift.

玫瑰經 Chinese Apostolate First Sunday Rosary: The Apostolate meets every first Sunday of the month (TODAY!) following the 10:15 AM Mass, to pray the Rosary in the Don Bosco Room. 

National Night Out August 4! Meet the SFPD, fight crime, and have fun! Once again, are proud to host National Night Out on August 4 from 5:00-7:30 PM, on Filbert St., in front of the Church. Join the good officers from SFPD's Central Station and other first responders neighbors, and community organizations. Meet and show gratitude to your police officers and enjoy music, cookouts, contests, youth events, and more.

The Transfiguration of the Lord: On Wednesday we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration. Masses will be at 7:00 and 9:00 AM. 

Eucharistic Adoration & Confession/ Anointing of the Sick: We have Adoration & Confession every Friday, following the 7:00 AM Mass. And on the first Friday of the month (this Friday) we have the Anointing following the 7:00 AM Mass. 

Mission Appeal: Next weekend we have the annual Mission Appeal. This year’s guest missionary will be Fr. Ronald Sibugan, A.A., of the Assumptionists order. The North American Province of the Assumptionists carry on missionary work in Mexico, the Philippines, and East Africa. Their works include schools and nurseries, formation programs for both laity and clergy, and education and aid programs for underprivileged villages. Fr. Ronald will tell us more and please be generous! 

Salesian Cooperators Formation Meeting: The Cooperators, the Salesian Lay Ministry, founded by Don Bosco himself, will have their next formation meeting on August 10 at 7:00 PM, via Zoom. For the Zoom link, please email franklavin@comcast.net
