May 10, 2026 Online Bulletin

Acts 8:5-8, 14-17; 1 Peter 3:15-18; John 14: 15-21. In the first reading, Philip proclaims the Gospel in Samaria and many people are cured. Peter and John follow and lay hands on the newly baptized there, and they received the Holy Spirit. In the second reading, Peter encourages the community to always be ready to give reason for their hope, and be willing to suffer for doing good. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that those who love him will follow his commandments.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When an elderly person knows that his or her death is near, he or she often calls the children together to offer a final piece of advice: "When I am no longer with you, you must care for and love one another." Similarly, Jesus knew he was soon to ascend into heaven, so he advises his disciples to love one another, to keep his commandments. Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit to guide them with love and peace.

As the Easter season comes closer to the end, today’s Gospel of St. John tells us how Jesus reminds his disciples to keep his word by loving one another. Jesus gives them his commandments and promises that he will return. He assures them that God the Father will send the Holy Spirit to guide and help them and us to continue sharing his love and proclaiming his teachings.

Jesus commands us to love God and our neighbors. While we may think this is a difficult task, it is possible. Jesus loved us by sacrificing His life for us, and so he urges us to love and even sacrifice our lives for one another. For example, Saint Maximilian Kolbe sacrificed his life for a fellow prisoner. In July 1941, prison guards discovered that a prisoner had escaped. To punish the group, they decided to kill ten other prisoners. Hundreds of prisoners lined up in fear, trembling and silent. When one man cried out, “My wife and children!” a skinny man stepped forward from the crowd and requested to die in his place. Our broken world needs more heroes willing to sacrifice themselves to bring about peace.

Every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we are reminded of the peace Jesus gave his disciples the same peace we share with one another. During the Communion Rite, the priest says, “Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever.” The priest continues, “The peace of the Lord be with you always.” We respond, “And with your spirit,” Then we exchange the sign of peace to one another by bowing, hugging, or shaking hands.

True peace must start within our hearts. Jesus warns us not to let our hearts be troubled. If we do not have peace within ourselves, how can we share it with others? May the love and peace of the Risen Christ remain with us and the world always, so that we may live in harmony and witness to our Christian faith.

Let us remember to pray for all of our grandmothers, mothers and spiritual mothers as we celebrate Mother’s Day today.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Fr. Tho

Bible Study! Deacon Khoa leads Bible Study every Thursday at 7:00 PM. Come join us in exploring the word of God!

The Ascension of the Lord: Thursday is the Solemnity of the Ascension, but in our diocese, it is moved to the closest Sunday, so we will celebrate next Sunday.

St. Augustine on the meaning of the Ascension: “Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.”

NEXT SATURDAY! SALESIAN YOUNG ADULTS GAME NIGHT AT 6:00 PM!

Want fun, friends, service and faith? Our Salesian Young Adults invite you to share all of the above as we serve our Church and get to know one another! We have Bible studies, board games, monthly Mass, volunteering, movie nights, excursions and so much more. Events will be posted weekly on the Grapevine, the website for young Bay Area Catholics, and you can learn more here. yag.salesians.sspp@gmail.com

Santa Gemma: On May 17 at the 12:00 noon Italian Mass, we will celebrate the feast of Santa Gemma, dear to the hearts of Italians and the Lucchesi worldwide. A luncheon at the Italian Athletic Club will follow. Reservation flyers are on the tables.

Archdiocesan Annual Appeal: This year, our Archdiocesan Annual Assessment is $74,903. So far 29 families/parishioners have given or pledged $17,326, leaving us with a balance of $57,577. Corpus Christi Procession!  Mark your calendars for June 7, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We will have our annual Corpus Christi Procession from Saints Peter and Paul over to our friends at the  National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, on Columbus and Vallejo Streets, following the noon Mass. More details soon!

玫瑰經 Chinese Apostolate First Sunday Rosary: The Apostolate meets every first Sunday of the month, following the 10:15 AM Mass, to pray the Rosary in the Don Bosco Room.

IMPORTANT: REQUIREMENTS FOR GODPARENTS: Basic knowledge of the Faith has fallen off so badly in this country that we often have to surprise and disappoint people (often longtime members of the parish) when we tell them that they do NOT meet the qualifications to serve as a Godparent. So we take this opportunity to teach. For instance, how many reading this know that if you do not attend Mass every Sunday (obvious health/travel exceptions) you are not qualified to serve as a Godparent? Or if you are a Catholic who is married civilly, but not married in the Church, you are not qualified to serve as a Godparent? Of course every Catholic is required to go to Mass every Sunday and  on Holy Days of Obligation, and we should all be doing it. And for those Catholics married civilly, we invite you to sacramentalize your marriage through the convalidation process. Call the parish office for more information.
