Ezekiel 37:12-14; Romans 8:8-11; John 11:1-45 or 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45. In the first reading, God promises life and liberty to the Israelites. In the second reading, Saint Paul reminds the Romans that they must strive to overcome their sinful natures so as to live in union with Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead and makes the bold proclamation that those who believe in him will never die.

Domenica 5A Di Quaresima

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we celebrate the third scrutiny of our catechumens and candidates. Since October, they have journeyed with us, preparing their hearts to receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. We also celebrate the confirmation with our students on Sunday at noon Mass with Fr. Stephen Howell. These young men and women will be filled with the Holy Spirit and confirm their faith. Central to their journey and ours is a firm belief in the Resurrection. Without it, our faith would have no foundation.

In today’s Gospel, we witness the raising of Lazarus. You might wonder: why did Jesus wait four days before arriving? Biblical scholars suggest this timing was intentional. In the tradition of the time, a person buried for four days was considered "truly" dead, beyond any hope of natural recovery. By waiting, Jesus performs a miracle that leaves no room for doubt: He is truly the Son of God with power over death itself.

The family at Bethany Martha, Mary, and Lazarus holds a special place in the Gospels. It is striking that the scriptures do not mention parents or spouses; instead, they are presented as a household of siblings. This imagery reflects the ideal Christian community: a place where there are no superiors, only brothers and sisters in Christ.

Jesus challenges Martha and all of us with a fundamental question. After declaring, "I am the resurrection and the life," He asks, "Do you believe this?" Our Lenten journey is the preparation for our own "Yes." On Easter Sunday, we will renew our baptismal promises and confirm this belief. But to reach the light of the Resurrection, we must first confront the "tombs" in our own lives. As St. Paul reminds us, we are called to live in the Spirit, not in the flesh.

As we celebrate this final scrutiny and confirmation, let us join our catechumens, candidates and confirmandi in conquering our sinfulness. Let us emerge from the "death" of our old habits and dwell in the Spirit, opening ourselves fully to the love and peace of God.

Fr. Tho Bui, SDB
Pastor
