Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Our Patrons!
Friday, June 26, 2026parish-news
Acts 12: 1-11; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18; Matthew 16:13-19. In the first reading, Peter is arrested and imprisoned. An angel of the Lord wakes Peter from his sleep and leads him out of the prison. Paul writes to Timothy, The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. In the Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples: Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter says, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus tells Peter that he is the rock upon whom the Church will be built.
San Pietro e Paolo
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On June 29, 1884, the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul, Archbishop Joseph Alemany dedicated the original church located at Filbert and Dupont streets (now Grant Avenue). I tried to find out why our parish was named after these two saints. According to our parish history book, The Chronicles of “The Italian Cathedral” of the West: “The Reverend Carlo Franchi, the first pastor, had arrived in San Francisco in 1880. Assigned as assistant pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe (established in 1875 to serve Latins, meaning both Spanish and Italians), Father Franchi petitioned for a separate parish for Italians.” (Page 1)
While the book does not explicitly state why the parish was named after the two great pillars of the Church, we found some insight online: “Italian devotion to Saints Peter and Paul is deeply rooted in their roles as patrons of Rome and martyrs who died in the city under Nero... June 29 was a national holiday in Italy until 1977 and is still a holiday in Rome and some other cities.” Based on this, we can assume that our Italian forefathers and foremothers chose these two great saints to protect and inspire our parish.
Today, we celebrate the 142nd Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, which marks the "birthday" of our parish. We celebrate the feast day of the two pillars of the Church. Peter proclaimed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and Jesus blessed him as the rock of faith, naming him the leader of the Church. Saint Paul is known for his dramatic conversion after encountering a vision of Jesus, after which he was baptized and sent out to be a missionary to the Gentiles.
We are proud and honor to be parishioners of this beautiful church, knowing that these two great saints watch over and protect us. When visitors come, I always ask if they can identify which statue on the main altar is Peter and which is Paul. Most of the time, people correctly guess that Peter is the one holding the keys and Paul is the one holding the sword.
As we celebrate our patron saints today, let us pray for their intercession to guide and protect our parish and to help our parish community grow in faith, hope, and love.
Happy Feast Day!

We had been patching it here and there over the past 35 or 40 years or longer, but now it has been done right! Thanks to Fr. Tho for leading another important project and to Craig and his crew who did the job with the least possible disruption. And thanks again to all of you who have supported your Church!
