Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8; John 20: 1-9. The first reading tells of how Peter, after encountering the risen Lord Jesus and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, is enabled to boldly preach the Gospel message. The second reading reminds us that our lives can be transformed by opening ourselves to the power of the risen Lord Jesus.  The Gospel recounts Mary Magdalene going to the tomb of only to find it empty.

Domenica Di Pasqua

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it! It is a great joy that our church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Today’s Gospel of John describes the cornerstone of our Catholic faith, a narrative that moves us from the darkness of Good Friday to the radiant hope of the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. Reflecting on this passage, we find profound truths about God's saving action and the role of witness. John, the disciple of Jesus saw the empty tomb and believed. The Gospel of John describes the three characters are Mary Magdalene, Peter and John

Mary Magdalene’s devotion. Her journey "while it was still dark" is a powerful metaphor for the soul seeking Christ even when hope seems extinguished. Mary Magdalene’s reaction reminds us that God often meets us in our confusion. She did not need to have a perfect understanding of the Resurrection to be the "Apostle to the Apostles"; she only needed her love for Jesus and her willingness to tell others what she saw.

Then the dynamic between Peter and John at the tomb is one of the most human moments in the Gospel. Peter’s hesitation as we noted, his pause at the threshold might reflect the weight of his recent denial. It adds a layer of mercy to the story even the one who faltered is invited back to the empty tomb.

Whereas John’s reflection, "He saw and believed." John formulates his thought that faith is not contrary to reason is vital. He reflects on Jesus teaching that he will rise on the third day. The "carefully arranged burial cloths" suggest order and divine intention, not the chaos of a grave robbery of human caused.

Throughout this Easter season, we are called to continually meditate upon the Scriptures on the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The empty tomb is the foundational truth of our faith. Without the Resurrection, Christ's sacrifice would be in vain. It is the cornerstone of our hope and the guarantee of our own future resurrection. Like Mary Magdalene and Jesus’ disciples, we are called to be witnesses to the Resurrection in our own lives. We believe that in the Eucharist, we encounter the risen Christ in a real and profound way. The empty tomb paved the way for this encounter, when we receive the Body and the Blood of Jesus Christ, who conquered death.

As we celebrate this Easter Sunday, let us remember our catechumens and candidates in our prayers who just received the initial Sacraments at the Easter Vigil as well as embrace the joy and hope that emanates from the empty tomb, proclaiming with our lives, "Christ is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!"

Have a blessed Easter!

Fr. Tho
