The Fifth Sunday of Lent
Sunday, April 3, 2022
Isaiah 43:16–21: Ps 126 “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy”; Philippians 3:8; John 8:1–11.“I am doing something new!” the LORD says to Isaiah as he and the exiles return to the holy land, pointing out that mercy and salvation were not onetime gifts to the Chosen People, but were being given right now, transforming them and the world. Paul testifies to his transformation, leaving everything behind to pursue perfect union with Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus forgives the adulterous woman, giving life when she faced certain death. Listening to today’s readings, let us thank God for the mercy and salvation we have been given.
Domenica 5A Di Quaresima
From the Pastor's Desk:
Achieving Peace
There are two ways we can work to achieve peace.
One way is to eliminate all who disturb our peace – send them away, distance ourselves from, silence, restrain, sanction them. Once we are far from all we don’t want to see or hear, we believe we shall find peace.
However, if we keep eliminating people, we shall soon find ourselves alone and abandoned because, there no one we shall not eventually eliminate, since no one will NEVER NOT disappoint us. No one will always live up to our expectations.
Moreover, because we too, are imperfect, one day we shall find ourselves ousted, abandoned and eliminated by those who will believe they’ll find peace when we are no longer around.
I doubt we will enjoy true peace when we’re finally all alone, knowing that we have been rejected by those we have rejected in the first place.
The other way to peace is to befriend those who, we believe, disturb our peace. Once we’ve learned to accept our differences and imperfections, to respect each other and receive the good each person brings to us and the community then we shall enjoy peaceful and meaningful relationships with each other. This does not mean reconciling with what’s wrong and evil. What’s evil and sinful ought to be weeded out. However, sincere respect for individuals will know how to deal effectively with wrongdoing and evil.
The leaders of God’s People never really liked Jesus. For them, he was disturbing their peace. They looked for ways to get rid of him rather than make peace with him. In today’s Gospel we see how the leaders of God’s people believe they will get rid of Jesus along with a woman who, in their opinion, is harmful to the community.
Jesus shows them how reconciliation and respect will gain peace. Getting rid of the sinner will not bring peace in Jesus’ book but respecting the sinner and getting rid of sin will. He’s invited the leaders of God’s people to do that, by declaring “The one among you who is without sin may cast the first stone,” and by telling the woman, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”
Following the Lord Jesus, let us then work for peace through respect and reconciliation.
