Bulletin
Isaiah 66:18-21; Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13; Luke 13:22-30. In the first reading, God proclaims that he comes to gather all nations. The second reading exhorts the Christian community not to disdain discipline, as it originates from God’s love. In the Gospel from Luke, Jesus tells his followers to strive for salvation through the narrow gate
Domenica 21A Del Tempo Ordinario
Saint WHO?
Saint John XXIII
Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was the fourth of 12 children born to sharecroppers in Sotto il Monte in northern Italy. He went to the seminary as the age of 12. “I wanted to love God at all costs,” he later explained., “and I thought of nothing other than becoming a priest at the service of simple souls in need of patient and diligent care.”
After ordination he worked as secretary to his bishop and then as a medical orderly in World War I. Assigned in 1925 as a papal diplomat, he served for many years in Bulgaria, Turkey, and France. During World War II, he helped thousands of Jews obtain documentation that would ensure them safe passage from areas under Nazi control.
After only five years as Cardinal and Patriarch of Venice, Angelo was elected Roman Pontiff, taking the name John XXIII. He declared his desire to be a “pastoral pope”—a shepherd with his eye on the sheep. He wrote the social encyclical Mater et Magistra and declared in Pacem in terris that peace on earth is grounded in human dignity and the equality of peoples. Less than three months into his pontificate he called for an ecumenical council, Vatican II.
John died the year after the council began, prompting a spontaneous worldwide cry of grief for “Good Pope John.”
Father in heaven, through the intercession of Saint John XXIII, grant me a simple, childlike heart. –From the “Magnificat”; Fr. Al Mengon, SDB
